After an injury: when and how to return

Returning does not depend on whether the pain has gone. The four signs that show load can be increased.

The most common mistake after an injury is not laziness but haste. The pain goes away, you go back to your old training load, and two weeks later you are back where you started. The question about returning is not whether it still hurts, but what the tissue can take.

The absence of pain does not mean healing

Pain stops sooner than capacity comes back. The two are not the same thing, and that is exactly why so many returns go wrong. A muscle or a tendon can still be weaker than it was before the injury, weeks after the complaint has gone.

Four signs that load can be increased

  1. Range of movement is back, and there is no pain near the end range.
  2. Strength is approaching the other side. It does not have to be identical, but a large difference is a warning.
  3. The complaint does not come back the next day. The day after training says more than the training itself.
  4. The quality of movement does not fall apart under load: the knee does not collapse inwards, the trunk does not twist, the other side does not take over.

If all four are there, the next level can come. If not, we stay where we are and do that better.

Why the build-up is stepwise

We increase load in planned steps: first range of movement and stability, then strength, and finally speed and change of direction. That order is not accidental: sudden movements are the ones that demand the most from tissue, which is why they come last.

Throughout, we watch how your body responds. Whatever it tolerates badly, we scale back. That is not a step backwards, it is part of the process.

What physiotherapy and massage can add

Sports rehabilitation rarely stands alone. If there is a lasting musculoskeletal cause behind the complaint, physiotherapy works on it more specifically. Massage can support recovery during the heavier weeks. Together, the three build a clearer picture of what is going on, faster.

Where the line is

Sports rehabilitation does not replace a medical examination. With a fresh injury, acute pain, radiating symptoms or recent surgery, your treating doctor decides what can be loaded and what cannot. Swelling, heat, fever or sudden loss of strength call for a doctor, not a gym.
